lay, lie


1) lay - / leɪ / (класть, ложить)– переходный глагол (transitive), т.е требует после себя объект действия.


  • I’m laying the book on the desk.   Я кладу эту книгу на стол. – кладу Что?


Lay (класть, ложить) – неправильный глагол:

lay, laid, laid



2) lie /laɪ/ (лежать) – intransitive, т.е. не требует после себя объект.


  • I’m lying on my bed.  Лежу на своей кровати. 


Lie (лежать) – неправильный глагол:

lie, lay, lain



3) lie - /laı/ (лгать) – intransitive, т.е. не требует после себя объект.


  • She lied to me about her age. Она лгала мне о своем возрасте.


Lie (лгать) – правильный глагол:

lie, lied, lied

lie - /laı/

  • I will lay the book on the table before I lie down for a nap.
  • He decided to lie in the sun after he lay the beach towel out.
  • Please lay your jacket on the chair while you lie back and relax.
  • If you lie still, the doctor can examine the area where you lay your hand.
  • She asked him to lay the flowers gently on the grave as she prepared to lie beside her loved one.
  • Before you lie on the couch, make sure to lay the remote control nearby.
  • I often lie awake at night, thinking about the tasks I need to lay out for the next day.
  • He will lay his cards on the table and then lie back to think about his strategy.
  • As she lay on the grass, she couldn't help but lie about her adventures to her friends.
  • After he lay the groundwork for the project, he had to lie down to recover from exhaustion.
Key Differences:
    • Lay (to place something down): /leɪ/
    • Lie (to recline or be in a horizontal position): /laɪ/
